Following my previous post, I’d like to introduce a few more places in Seoul that hold a special place in my heart.
The first spot is Olympic Park, located in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul.
This park was originally built for the 1988 Seoul Olympics and has since been transformed into a peaceful retreat for citizens.
Along with World Cup Park in Mapo-gu, Seoul Forest in Seongdong-gu, and Dream Forest in Gangbuk-gu, it is considered one of Seoul’s major urban parks.
As you enter the park, the World Peace Gate welcomes you.
Olympic Park is home to nine major landmarks collectively known as the "Nine Scenic Views of Olympic Park," and the World Peace Gate is one of them.
If you look up at the gate, you’ll see a mural of the Four Guardian Deities, known as Blue Dragon (Cheongryong), White Tiger (Baekho), Vermilion Bird (Jujak), and Black Tortoise (Hyeonmu) — mythical creatures believed to protect the four cardinal directions.
Olympic Park also offers convenient parking and free admission, making it an easy and enjoyable destination for anyone.
In addition to the places I’ve mentioned, you can also enjoy Wildflower Garden, where seasonal blooms create stunning views; the Rose Garden, filled with fragrant flowers; and even fountain shows held from May to October.
There’s more than enough to explore and enjoy at your own pace.
The next spot I’d like to introduce is Naksan Park, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Naksan corresponds to the Blue Dragon (Cheongryong)—one of the Four Guardian Deities I mentioned earlier at Olympic Park.
You can either drive up to the park directly or take a walk from Hyehwa Station.
However, be aware that on weekends or during peak hours, the parking lot can get quite full, so parking might be a bit difficult.
Once you reach the top, you’ll be able to see a long stretch of fortress wall
On the opposite side of the wall, there are many commercial buildings, so you can see tall skyscrapers and Namsan Tower.
The last place I’d like to introduce is Seodaemun Prison, located in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
The old Seoul Detention Center was renovated to restore the former Gyeongseong Prison and Seodaemun Prison, and it now operates as a museum dedicated to the history of the independence movement and democratic movements.
This former prison held independence activists during the Japanese colonial period as well as democracy activists during the military dictatorship after liberation. You can get a close look at this significant historical site here.
The first thing you’ll see upon arrival is the Independence Gate.
It was built to proclaim the Korean Empire’s will for independent sovereignty against foreign powers.
Construction took place from 1896 to 1898, spanning the late Joseon Dynasty into the Korean Empire period.
Although its architectural style resembles a European triumphal arch, it was not built to function as a gate but rather as a monument.
These activists came from all walks of life—men and women, young and old—without distinction.
I truly believe that their struggle to gain freedom amid an uncertain and fearful future was incredibly courageous and noble.
It’s important to remember that not participating in the independence movement at that time was not something to be blamed for. On the contrary, those who were caught participating brought suffering not only upon themselves but also their families.
Nevertheless, as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I would like to once again express my deepest gratitude and respect to those who selflessly dedicated themselves to our country.
