밤이 더 뜨거운 전통도시 페스 in 모로코 1편 (Fes, Morocco — a traditional city that comes alive at night episode1)

영국에서 워홀 생활을 시작한 이후 처음으로 해외여행을 갔다.

그동안 직장과 영국에 적응하느라 영국 입국 후 거의 3개월 만에 가는 첫 해외여행이다.

I started my working holiday life in the UK, and this was my first trip abroad since arriving in the country.

I was busy adjusting to life in the UK, and after almost three months, I finally went on my first trip abroad.

My destination was Morocco.

모로코로 향하는 여정 (Journey to Fes, Morocco)

나는 런던 스텐스테드 공항에서 모로코 페스로 향하는 아침 비행기여서 새벽부터 기차로 이동하였다.

약 2시간의 지연 끝에 드디어 비행기에 올랐다.

I left early in the morning from London Stansted Airport, heading to Fes. I took a train from early dawn to get there. After about a two-hour delay, I finally boarded the plane.

모로코에 도착할때 쯤 비행기 창문 밖을 내다보니 아름다운 호수와 규칙적으로 심어진 나무를 볼 수 있었다.

As we were approaching Morocco, I looked out of the airplane window and saw beautiful lakes and neatly arranged rows of trees below.

모로코 공항은 생각 보다 크지 않아 금방 밖을 나올 수 있었다.
밖에 나오자마자 뜨거운 태양과 많은 택시 기사들이 우리에게 다가왔다.

모로코는 대중교통이 잘 발달되어 있지 않아 택시 이용이 많다.

페스에는 두가지 종류의 택시가있는데 빨강색 택시는 구시기지와 신시기지 안에서만 이용할 수있고 공항에서 신시기지나 구시기지를 려면 큰 하얀색 택시를 이용해야된다.

우리는 공항에서 호텔근처에 있는 신시기지 까지 150 디르함을 지불하였다.

인터넷을 찾아보니 공항에서부터 구시기지는 200 디르함을 요구한다고 한다.

The airport in Morocco was smaller than I expected, so I was able to get outside quickly. As soon as I stepped out, I was greeted by the intense sun and many taxi drivers approaching us.

Public transport in Morocco is not very convenient, so taxis are widely used. In Fes, there are two types of taxis. The red taxis operate only within the old and new city areas, while larger white taxis are used for trips from the airport to either the new city or the old city.

We paid 150 dirhams from the airport to our hotel in the new city. From what I found online, taxis from the airport to the old city usually cost around 200 dirhams.

페스 엘 발리 (구시기지)- Fes el Bali (Old City)

호텔 체크인 후 바로 우리는 유네스코 세계 문화 유산으로 지정 되어있는 구시기지 페스 엘 발리로 향하였다.

페스 엘 발리는 9000여개 이상의 골목으로 이루어져있어 차량이 진입하지 못한다. 그리고 길이 복잡한 탓에 구글맵도 가끔식 길을 잃기도 한다.

골목 양쪽에는 수많은 상점, 숙박시설, 주거 공간이 이어져 있었다.

After checking into our hotel, we immediately headed to Fes el Bali, the UNESCO World Heritage old city.

Fes el Bali consists of over 9,000 narrow alleyways, making it impossible for cars to enter. Because of its complexity, even Google Maps sometimes gets lost inside the maze-like streets. The alleys are lined with countless shops, accommodations, and residential homes.

우리는 이 복잡한 미로같은 골목길을 이동하던 도중 현지인에게 안내를 받아 이곳저곳을 구경하였다.

처음으로 간 곳은 이 구시기지에서 대표적인 관광지 가죽 염색장을 갔다.

가죽 염색장에서는 동물가죽을 부드럽게 가공하기 위하여 비둘기 배설물,석회를 이용하는데 그 과정에서 악취가 발생한다.

그래서 우리는 가이드가 민트를 나눠주었다.

악취가 심하게 날때 민트를 코에 갖다 대면 된다고하였다.

While exploring this maze-like city, we were guided by a local who showed us various spots.

Our first stop was the famous leather tannery, one of the city’s most well-known attractions. At the tannery, animal hides are processed using pigeon droppings and limestone to soften them, which creates a strong smell during the process. Because of this, we were given fresh mint leaves by the guide. We were told to hold the mint under our noses when the smell became too strong.

식당으로 이동 중 가이드가 이곳의 문의 규칙에 대해서 설명을 해주었는데 상당히 흥미로웠다.

아래 문을 보면 손잡이 두개가 있는데 이것은 1층에 한 가정 2층에 한 가정 총 두 가정이 이 집안에 살고있다는 뜻이다.
그리고 성별에 따라 노크횟수가 다르다고 가이드가 설명해주었다.

On the way to a restaurant, the guide explained an interesting local tradition about doors. On the door shown below, there are two door knockers, which indicate that two families live in the same house—one on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. The guide also mentioned that knocking patterns can differ depending on gender, which I found quite interesting.

우리는 뷰가 좋은 테라스에 앉아 모로코 전통음식인 타진이랑 쿠스쿠스를 먹었다.

타진은 도자기 냄비에 닭고기나 양고기를 넣고 레몬 올리브를 넣어 만든 음식이다.

도자기 냄비에 담겨나오니 첫 입은 매우 뜨거우니 조심해야한다. (나의 경험담이다 ㅋㅋ)

쿠스쿠스는 아주작은 쌀 같이 생긴 알갱이랑 야채와 고기가 섞여 나온다.

이곳에서의 식사는 종업원이 매우 친절했고 가격도 저렴하여 매우 만족했다.

쿠스쿠스 2개와 타진 2개 물 2개 쥬스2개를 먹었는데 총 390디르함밖에 나오지않았다.

We then had lunch at a rooftop terrace with a great view, where we tried traditional Moroccan dishes: tagine and couscous.

Tagine is a dish made by slow-cooking chicken or lamb with lemon and olives in a clay pot. Because it is served in the same pot it is cooked in, the first bite can be extremely hot, so be careful (speaking from experience, haha).

Couscous consists of very small grain-like semolina served with vegetables and meat.

The restaurant was very satisfying—the staff were extremely friendly and the prices were quite reasonable. We had 2 couscous dishes, 2 tagines, 2 waters, and 2 juices, which came to only 390 dirhams in total.

페스 엘 발리에는 수 많은 출입구가 있는데 우리는 그중에서 제일 대표적인 출입문인 블루게이트를 통해 나왔다.

Fes el Bali has many entrances, and we left through the most famous one, Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue Gate).

우리는 블루게이트를 통해나와 근처 둘러보면서 문득 페스 엘 발리는 고양이가 엄청 많다는 것을 느꼈다.

현지인한테 물어보니 쥐를 잡기위해서 고양이를 많이 키운다 했었다.

As we walked around near the gate, we noticed that there were many cats in the medina. When we asked a local, we were told that cats are commonly kept to help control rats.
